This very accurately describes the same things I have encountered teaching college organic chemistry since 2001. I once heard the phrase, "You're always teaching to a minority." Well, that slice of students has gotten slimmer and slimmer. I take solace in the fact that the students that actually wanted to learn and grow in my class not only got stronger, but often used that experience as a template in the future.
